A little tip for successful sewing is to use good quality sewing thread. When it comes to sewing thread, cheapest is definately not the best. Even though you can't see with the naked eye. Cheaper sewing threads have lots of loose fibers that will clog up your sewing machine faster than using a quality thread. You can see the difference in thread qualities (enlarged 60X) here.
