There are two main reasons you will need to thread a sewing machine. The first is because the thread has snapped while you were sewing with the machine.
The second reason would be that you need to sew with a different color.

A little tip for successful sewing is to use good quality sewing thread. When it comes to sewing thread, cheapest is definately not the best. Even though you can't see with the naked eye. Cheaper sewing threads have lots of loose fibers that will clog up your sewing machine faster than using a quality thread.
You can see the difference in thread qualities for sewing curtains(enlarged 60X) here. So If you are not sure of the sewing threads quality. Then buy the smallest spool and try it out first.
There are a few different ways sewing machine bobbins fit in to a sewing machine. With my simple singer sewing machine the bobbin fits directly in to the top of the foot plate by sliding it open.
With other machines the bobbin is inserted in to a bobbin casing. Then this bobbin casing is inserted in to the machine.

The important points to watch out for is that you make sure the foot is fitted snugly in place. Then that you tighten the foot clamp screw securely. None of this is very difficult to do after a few goes.

Common problem can be a loud noise and your machine just stops sewing. Another problem could be that your fabric is getting clogged up with excess thread all bunching up.
