Bow window curtains

Hi Lee: Just purchased a home with a huge five-pane bow window in the formal living room that measures over 10 feet wide.

We have placed our sofa in front of it and had a custom pleated shade made to cover the entire window to save us from leaning over a few times a day to individually adjust each shade to the same length.

The shade is working, however the window definitely needs some additional treatment. We were thinking about installing a fabric cornice but I think it just may look too massive. Help!

Hi Lisa

I Think a fabric covered covered cornice is a great way to dress this kind of window. however you are right to think it may look a bit too wide on its own.

I have installed some very wide cornice window treatments in the past. One of the pictures above shows you one at 16ft wide. On wide windows with this kind of top treatment. I really recommend you hang dress curtains on each side.

These don't need to have lots of fabric in them on your window. I would say a width and a half of fabric (assuming 54" wide fabric) would be enough.

Another option as in the other window treatment photo above. Is to simply install a decorative curtain rod and hang some dress curtains.

If you go with a cornice, then you will only need 2 very short curtain rods fixed to the underside of the cornice board. Just long enough to support the gathered curtains. I usually allow between 16" and 24". You could dress the curtains further by draping them in to curtain tie backs.

If you haven't already, then I recommend you read my e-guide to making and installing your own fabric covered cornice here.

All the best

What Visitors Say

"Dear Lee, Just wanted to say I found your site last week and it was an absolute godsend. Most helpful and informative - easy to follow instructions - and my very first bay window pelmet looks like the work of a true (and expensive) professional!

The pelmet and curtains both look much better in real life than on the photo of course. My wife thinks it all looks the work of a real pro rather than a first time amateur! Many many thanks for your site.

Kind regards Neal"
